What are the rules applying to people that are taking gemstones and jewellery home from holiday in thailand?

I am training in silversmithing and wish to buy some gemstones and other jewellery from reputable sources that I can find in thailand. If anything over a certain amount attracts taxation then what is the amount and how much is the taxation? Has anyone ever bought anytrhing like this in Thailand before? Any words of warning? All advice appreciated, thank you

You're going to love Thailand. The limit is $10,000. If you are purchasing with the intent to sell, taxes definitely apply, but I am not sure what the percentage is.

Buying gemstones. Here's the secret: Chantaburi. All anybody is doing there is buying and selling gemstones. But this place is not for the faint of heart nor the casual buyer. These are where serious dealers go. I learned a lot from sitting at other people's tables and watching.

The second best place is Silom road in Bangkok. But in both of these places, you need to know what you are doing. You can get ripped off or the best deals - even from the same store, depending on how they size you up.

Learn about Thai culture and try to take a course in gems. If you can't take a course, then read every page on this website. Lots of info on how to get good deals on gems.

If I remember correctly, it is $500 limit?

You may bring in items for personal use or as gifts.

The minute you say you are selling any of the items, the red flag goes up and you get the special line.

Try the Lao border or Laos itself, they make the finest silver jewelry that is sold in Thailand.

Maesai in the ChiangRai province also has good jewelry, loose stones may be found in both places. The Burma border may be good for shopping for gems, I did see some shops in MaeSai, and I also saw lots of fossils for sale.

Avoid the "gemstone tours" and traps of BKK!

Jewelry can be "worn out of the country" and "gifts" can be declared as tourist articles.

How expensive is a holiday in Thailand?

We are going on our honeymoon in Thailand for 4 weeks. How much should we budget for food and spending each week? We will be staying in Koh Samui for 2 weeks, then going on a tour of Thailand for the other two.

Also, does anyone have any recommendations for tours?

But you can decide that for your self. Don't take a fancy hotel. Find a cheap nice guesthouse with breakfast. That make you come near the culture and friendly people. Use the small food stalls around - taste soo goood. I will say you can get a good holiday for around 1000 bath a day - guesthouse included.

When you go for tour - then go to Kanchanaburi, with River Kwai bridge, tiger temple, water falls, jungle, hill tribes, elephant trekking, rafting, boat trips and a fantastic stunning nature - all settled in one place. Kanchanaburi is located 2 hours driving from Bkk.

if u really like island i suggest kho pagnan next to kho samui for honeymoon, u will get bore after 2 days on samui, take speed boat to kho pagnan and check out" naipan noi"beach , nice and quiet place, white sand all the way, for seafood and private beach, fanta bungalow on" chalok-lum bay" u will like it, much cheaper than samui, need help with up north trip let me know, about how much to spend in Thailand? 2-3000 bahts a day is a nice vacation,choke-dee

Hi, congrats on your honeymoon holiday. I think you have chosen a nice country to spend your holiday with. Especially in Samui. Though things may be a bit more expensive than in other parts of Thailand. Food will be quite cheap, you can budget about 500baht each for lunch and dinner for a good spread of food for couple. Other spending will depend on what you want to spend on. A massage will be about 500baht a person for 2 hours, a spa treatment will be about 1500baht a person. You can ask about couple massage and spa too.

As for other parts of Thailand for your other 2 weeks, I guess Bangkok will definitely be on your itinerary. How about a trip to the north Thailand like Chiangmai and Chiangrai? You can arrange the package with the travel agency while in Bangkok. These places has some nice scenery and places to visit.

You can write me at thaitourinfo@yahoo.com if you want more info.

Bangkok i Have heard is the best place to shop and spa experences etc massage, facials etc. Booking a tour from your country town is the most expensive way to do it. wait untill your there and get the thi's to take you around instead of the westerners. You can get a flight with airasia dirt cheap if you book your tickets online, the earlyer you book it the cheaper it is.

etc. Because your on the island you will need to go to the mainland, closs by is a place could Surat Thani. A plane from there to bangkok on the 14th of feb, the cheapest is only

as expensive as you want it to be. and as cheap as you want to be too. they have some great food at food stalls that are only 25 baht a dish. they also have places for as little as 200 baht a night. it can get expensive though. much more if you go to the western places.

Best company to book holiday in Thailand?

Need to book holiday in Thailand for August. I used Expedia last time I went but am sure there's companies cheaper. Am looking to book flights plus hotel.

Any recommendations from people who have used internet sites to book Thai breaks?

Thanks in advance

You should try using Wishcraft - they use their contacts to sort out holidays for people and we always use them. They have always got us a good deal and it take all the hassle out of it having the organising done for you.

Holiday in Dominican Republic or Thailand?

IM considering an all inclusive holiday in the Dominican Republic or a Holiday in Thailand this summer (two weeks)

Was wondering which is the better location in terms of value, quality & exoticness and any recommendations or places to avoid?

Thailand all day long! With an all inclusive you are rest

I have been to the Dominican Republic various times and long to go to Thailand. I have friends that have been though and have done alot of research.

The Dominican Republic is probably the cheapest option in terms of the price of package deals - its common to find 2 week all inclusive deals for around £600 (depending when you go). However, because of flights etc Thailand works out more expensive BUT when you get there will be a lot cheaper. If you're going all inclusive though this doesn't really matter.

I'd say Thailand - because I havn't been and want to go BUT I did have FANTASTIC and I mean AMAZING times in the Dominican Republic every time I've been so I do believe everyone should see and experience the DR.

Where ever you decide enjoy.

I've been to the Dominican Republic and stayed @ the Barcelo Beach in Peurto Plata. It was all inclusive (4 star) and a lot of fun. You had access to the Barcelo Casino Resort, Barcelo Golf, and a few other resorts. The food was pretty good. There were tours and other items you could take but be vary wary.

I haven't been to Thailand so I can't help you with that.

I have friends that suggested Cuba over the DR.

I've never been to the Dominican but i have stayed 4 weeks on various beaches in Thailand. Even if you don't do the all inclusive, it's an amazing trip! Nothing can top the beaches and snorkling off of Phuket.

it's a long way to travel but it's totally worth the drip.

I went to Dominican Republic with my parents and brother when I was bout 6ish.

I hated it. When we tried to go shopping a guy wouldn't let us leave unless we bought something n he grabbed my bro!

And people were trying to get you to do deals and sell stuff to you!

Maybe it was jst my bad experience but I'm never going there again. :l

Come to the land of smiles thailand look on the net at Phuket Ko Samui and Ko Samet

Thailand.......... because i've never been to Dominican yet

Is it better to get foreign currency in Australia for a holiday to Thailand or to use an ATM once I am there?

I am going on Holiday to Thailand and want to know whether it is better to get my foreign currency in Australia before I go, exchange Aussie dollars once I am there, or just use an ATM card? Where will I get the best rates? Thanks.

Use you ATM while your here.

if you decide you want to be able to use the ATM, do make sure you let your bank know you're travelling overseas before you go ... in the UK it's becoming an increasing problem that if you go quite legitimately on holiday and try to use your card, the fraud department at your bank will cancel it thinking that someone is defrauding you ... which is great that they're looking at security, but a bummer when you're stuck on holiday with no money !!

so before you travel, ring them up and let them know where/when you're travelling

If you bank has low bank charges, useyour ATM there. Otherwise if the bank charges are high, it may be more worthwhile to bring AUD there to change. Unless you like the convenience of the ATM card and the preferable inter-bank exchange rate.

You will get a better rate at an ATM, But ....... Bear in mind your Aussie bank will take fee's.. Westpac for example charge $5 / transaction plus a conversion fee based on % plus a M/card % fee, even with a debit card..

The ATM will give you about 3 Baht / $ more.

generally you will get a far better rate in thailand(or any other country, usually) than you will at home.....bear in mind a lot of banks charge a hefty fee for using their card abroad.....find one that doesn't.I'm from the uk so I use Nationwide or HSBC with Bank Account Plus(maybe available to Oz?)

Check the xchange rates and your bank fees. When travelling I always carry some of the country's currency on me, but for the most part I use a debit card. Makes life easy.

How much will a holiday to Thailand be over christmas time?

Me and my family want to go to Thailand for Chrismas - how much will a holiday be roughly all inc?

Thanks

No one can really say what the economic situation will be like come the later part of 2009. Oil prices could be anywhere. In general hotel prices will be a bit higher at xmas and woud expect flights to be at peak period prices. Out of the peak periods, accomadation can be found in Thailand for about 200 pounds a month at lower grade hotels. Condos can be found for 180 pounds upwards.

Nobody will know. Unless they got a crystal ball...

Generally speaking Dec-Jan are the peak months for tourism to Thailand. Prices are the highest in that period peaking at Christmas and New Year. (Many hotels have compulsory gala dinners.)

But other factors play an important role too: when the 'canaries' occupied the airport, it killed the entire season. Many hotels had 20% or less occupancy. If the dollar or Euro would dip a lot, it would influence things considerably. Currently there is an economic crisis. Might result in people not traveling. That's excluding Bin Laden and his Al Quackies performing somewhere.

In other words: nobody knows for sure.

I would say it depends on your budget.

In Thailand you can live very cheaply and you can spend a fortune.

Hotels, Apartment and Condos come in many different sizes, locations, qualities and of course price ranges.

Work it backwards. How much do you have to spend?.... and then do your research..

How many family members are in your family?

Where in Thailand are you planning to go?

Once you know all these things your question may be answered more accurately.

Uk family ?

Tickets are £500 per person not sure for children

I would book asap check your dates on lastminute.com and when you see your price range Get your tickets Its always high I ahve this probelm every year and wait and wait then it goes up

Budget per person £20 per person food drinks travel taxis etc

Hotels look at agoda.com Put your budget per night and area that will give you the overall prices

WHat you do and where you want to go in that time will plus your budget Its not that cheap and exchange rate is bad now

Email me markontour2004@yahoo.com

if you need help later there are a lot of nice people who live there in this forum and just pop your questions here and read what people are asking also

just to give you a little clue myself and my partner flew with emirates via dubai, then did the golden triangle tour, that is two nights in a hotel in bangkok, then five nights touring with five nights full board, with a driver and a tour guide, stopping in three different hotels. we then added five nights in pattaya beach onto the end of the tour this involved a internal flight from chang mai to bangkok, and five nights bed and breakfast in pattaya, we flew out on 20 dec 08 flew back on 3 jan 09. total cost of holiday with kuoni travel was £4,700 plus spending money

I'm not trying to dance around your question but:

Back in the 70's the Government deregulated airline fares. Which means they can change by the hour (if they want). Now, looking at the countries financial state of being nobody can forcast any cost for "anything".

When I worked for Trans World Airlines International reservations department (for 25 years), I would recommend my :"shopper" calls to call as many airlines as possible. Get the price for your trip (for right-now-this-second)... order tickets (to lock in the fare).

It's a very difficult thing to keep calling around to get the best price.

2nd problem - Wait too long and the flight may be sold out of discount tickets (because the public does not know that the airlines can limit the amount of discount seats on every flight). I've seen flights going 15 minutes apart to the same city that were a different price !!

3rd situation. You want to get your seat assignment as early as 1 year (less a few days) BEFORE everybody else. You want forward clear of the wing and no where near the bathroom or kitchen.

I'm afraid the only way to lock-in your seat assignment is by having it printed on the ticket.

iv just come back from this christmas. i was there for a month and spent £600. This included everything apart from flights. i also did buy loads of presents and traveled thousands of miles around thailand. The main cost is probably drink. i thought it would be very cheap for drink (10p a Beer for example) but it ended up being about £3 for a beer. That was bad seeing as i was paying £3 for my room that night.

Top Tip - haggle with everything you want to buy. Tuk Tuks you must haggle otherwise they will take Alot of money off you. don't pay more then 150baht for one.

Holiday / Thailand ?

Did you been in Thailand for holiday, i have two weeks break on Oct. aim thinking to go there but the problem is i dont have any information about that country ( hotels , interesting places , food , prices , flight ticket ) will be great to hear from you .

PS. I will start my journey from London.

Hello,

(ANS) Right NOW!! NOT a good time to be going to Thailand. The country is in political chaos as there are a large number of militants who want to bring down the countries Prime Minister, they accuse him of corruption.

**Airports have been closed & UK tourists have been trapped recently. I don't know if the situation has improved at all.

**My advise would be to visit the Home Office website were they post advise to UK people on how safe it is to visit places like Thailand.

SEE:- http://www.fco.gov.uk/en/travelling-and-living-overseas/travel-advice-by-country/

Kind Regards Ivan.

Here is your rough guide.

Find ticket on edreams.com london-Bangkok is around

1000 +,- 50 euro.

About the political probs you may avoid it by travelling to island or somewhere out of bangkok.

MAin touristic places I would recommand IS south of thailand.

Try Krabi. tonsai-railey beach You can go to Khoasan road for more information.

Khoasan road is a cheap place for new traveller most of people there speak english so you won't have problem finding things or places you want to go.

Hotel- a very good one price is sround 30-100 euro depends on how luxury you looking for.

nice cheap guest houses or hostel you can find as chaep as 3-10 euro/ night

Food- Foods are realy cheap in thailand

it can be really cheap if you eat from street cart noodle or something available out there around 1-3 euro.

Fancy restaurent per meal is not more than 5 or 10 euro (exclusive-alcohol drinks ofcoz)

Shops- shirt are 3 euros or a bit more depends on quality.

transportation.-

Flight London_bangkok -1020 euro or around that.

Flight Domestic in Thailand around 80-110 euro for you have short trip wouldn't want to waste time for the bus I supposed.

But the bus to go down south or up north is around 15-20 euro + one night trip to get there.

If you decide to go to Tonsai I recommand MAMBO bangalow. the price is around 4 euro to 10 euro and it next to the beach. :)

have fun!

TIPS. ** when you arrive buy yourself some insect repellent.

Hi

Thailand is a beautiful place to see,and its very calm country. i have been there many times and never found anything wrong there.i have been to pataya, bangkok, phuket.one thing i must tell you phuket is one of the best place i have ever seen in my life.must go there, you will fall in love with its beauty.the hotels are not costly in thailand u can easily get a hotel for between 400 to 600 THB which is ecnomical.i have some pictures of phuket and its beauty on facebook u can see them my id is minchy_me@yahoo.com

Dont listen to the doom and gloom people. Thailand is still a very happy and safe place for holidays. Hotels are still available 3star for about 25 usd. Food is wonderful and cheap. Beaches clean beer cold and the locals are great.

You can see 1,000's of current actual Thai photos at http://www.visualthailand.com. This will give you a great idea of the places in Thailand you want to visit.

Try looking at the news before you decide to come here. Hopefully everything will be OK by Oct, but I would wait before I make any plans.

Holiday...?

Myself and 3 of my friends are planning to go on holiday in september for 2 weeks but 2 of them think that £500 each for 2 weeks, all inclusive in Turkey is expensive.

Me and the other girl think that this is reasonable

Is it?

That is very reasonable. Go for it and enjoy yourself. Mind the sun.

Thanks. Again I hope you enjoy yourself. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/accuse_write?qid=20080511031111AAZdpeA&kid=QbZ1BUjoEGLvb5JrHSbB&s=comm&date=2008-05-19+18%3A05%3A55&.crumb=

How bad does the holiday season affect the price of a plain ticket?

I got a price for a flight about a month ago and it was a really great price. I checked it a couple weeks later and it seems to have jumped up by almost $90! I don't plan to fly during the holidays, but would the holiday season, being that it's right around the corner, have a dramatic effect on the price? Do the prices tend to go down after the holidays or remain the same? I've never flown before so any info would be helpful!!

It's not necessarily that the airlines are jacking the price, but that the tickets sell out faster. The less seats available on a flight, the more expensive the tickets are. That is why the prices were so much cheaper a month ago, there more more available. If you are talking about a flight furthur away, I wouldn't think that seasonal prices would afferct that, it could also be that more tickets were sold in that time. A lot of airlines also have fare specials that you must buy at least 3 weeks in advance. Or the first time you looked there was a special going on, then that deal was over the next time you looked.

I think figuring out how airline pricing works is worse than taxes. General rules are buy as soon as possible and fly in the off season. Also flying certain days of the week is usually cheaper (tue, wed, thurs) And the more flexible you are the better price you can find.

Not as much as the fancy ones.

Yes it does. In Germany, everyone wants to get on a plane in August because that's when school lets out (we have a whole lot of other holidays throughout the year). If we could fly out in the middle of July, it would be a savings of over $500 per ticket to go over the Atlantic Ocean. But the 6 weeks starting in August? Forget about it unless you buy a ticket before the first week in December.

We must return to Economics 101, supply vs. demand. The higher the demand vs. supply the higher the price. Airlines want to make money so you'll find very few offering many seats at discounted levels when the demand for the flights are heavy.

Drive if you can. Tickets are elevated due to more people and the last minute planners. if you planned your ticket in advance it might be cheaper. you could also take a BUS.

AT least double at holiday times.

Prices tend to sky rocket during the peak holiday seasons... Before you fly, go to www.tsa.gov for rules and regulations so you know what is permitted in carry on and checked baggage, and all kinds of helpful info.
