You are asking for places with dives and nightlife. Then it will be Phuket. There are some dive spots acclaimed as among the best in the world in a recent US tour survey. So you can't go wrong. There are a number of island resorts to keep you hopping around for awhile. Likewise, Phuket has a number of theme parks for visitors, so you can keep yourself occupied whilst you are there.
So go and enjoy yourself. The locals are very friendly, not like those warnings you have about in Bangkok. Just normal common sense should prevails. Just have a good time there.

Bangkok is AMAZING! The nightlife is the best in the world. If you want my advice go to Soi 33, Soi Cowboy, and Nana plaza. Talk to the girls, drink, and have fun. Avoid paying the girls for "services" as you may end up getting sick. If you must take a girl back with you take her from one of the high end gogo bars and please please please use a condom! Avoid street walkers - with them you are likely to get robbed, drugged, or beat up. You are also more likely to get a disease.
-Check her ID - subtract 543 from the Thai year to get her birthdate in our year and be sure she is over 18. Thai prison is best avoided.
-Don't dine with "friendly" Thai people who you meet on the street or bar girls. You get crappy food and a huge bill. They get a kickback.
-Don't, no matter how good of a deal you think you are getting, buy anything - ESPECIALLY GEMS - to resell for a profit at home. It is a scam.
-Avoid Pat Pong bars, but go for the night market!
-It is often better to just pay if you get cheated (bill padding etc). Don't risk problems with the police for a few dollars. You may not come out the winner and it is a huge risk for a few bucks!
Don't be discouraged! I'm talking about the pitfalls so that you can avoid them! Bangkok is amazing! Knowing the scams and dangers makes it even more exciting, and if you get taken don't let it ruin your time. Keep in mind that the money you lose may go a long way towards feeding someones family. Have fun but don't go crazy!
If you choose Phuket, be sure to ask a lot of questions before signing up for a dive trip. We spent over an Hour driving around picking up people from other hotels before boarding the boat. Almost 2 hours getting to a so-so dive spot with some kind of tiny stinging things in the water. Afte a little over an hour the boat bought us back big waste of time.
The best places to dive are in the S Pacfic and none that I know of have good nightlife. Thailand has great nightlife but only soso diving.
So if you want great diving go to Fiji, New Guinea, Micronesia, Indonesia etc and bring your own nightlife with you. If your diving experience has only been in the Carabean, then you probably will be happy with Thailand.
Make sure you stop by the marketplace and each the favorite local snack... deep fried scorpions and other bugs.
