I have been on holiday to Thailand and although it is extremely beautiful there are a lot of touristy/westernised areas. We'd like to visit the more peaceful islands with lots to do and see.
I have been told that because of the weather Southern Thailand is best visited at this time of the year. true?

guys girls, please. if you have only HEARD about a place, stop selling it. phi phi is now a toilet. its overrun overrated and if you want to meet ya neighbour or someone from ya own town , then go to phi phi it was nice in 92, 95 and 97, in 2000 i hated it, in 2002 i refused to get off the boat, what a mess. islands are hard to find now that are peaceful, try up near similian. done use lonely planet , it wil only tell you to go where everyone else is going. Thailand is wasted by too many backpackers reading that bloody book.. Similian islands is my choice.use the net for advice, Weather- seriously, anytime is good. i am outta breathe !!!

Also try Rayong and Koh Samet near Pataya a lot of islands there not too bad Phuket is the best I havent been but everybody else has :)
I recommend you to come to Phuket Island.
There are some nice non-touristy areas of Koh Phangan. I've also heard that Koh Lanta is nice and peaceful. Koh Phi Phi is quite beautiful as well. I think the weather should be pretty nice on both coasts.
If you want a busy island Phuket, if you want you can visit Phi Phi from Phuket easily, if you want quiet tropical island style with beach cabins and small resorts then try Koh Mook, Koh Ngai or Koh Yai
i've never been there but you definitely have to visit the island where they filmed that movie "the beach" it looks spectacular!! not sure of the name of it though, you could probably google the movie and it should be listed somewhere.. have a great time!!
