Holiday in Thailand, close to Bangkok?

I am heading back to NZ for xmas and am stopping off in Bangkok for 6 days from Dec 10. I just want to relax on a nice beach somewhere close to Bangkok. I don't want to travel too far. I have been to Ko Samet and Koh Chang before but would like to try somewhere else. Any ideas.

You have lots of choices, for nighlife and touist attractions Pattaya and Jomtien about 2 hours from Bangkok are the most popular, the Hua Hin/ Cha-Am area is about 3 hours south and quieter than Pattaya but still somewhat lively at night. If you want more quiet and relaxing areas, Rayong is very nice and south of Pattaya is the Najomtien and Sunset Beach areas, these areas all have nice hotels and restaurants, but lack the nighlife that Pattaya offers. The closest beach with lots of hotels and restaurants is the Bangsaen area near Chonburi City, and it's only about an hour and twenty minutes from Bangkok, a very popular area for Thais, but not many foreign tourists.

Pattaya or Jomtien! Only 2 hours by bus, about 120 baht for the ride from Ekamai bus station.

Hotels are cheaper in Pattaya City than Phuket or Bangkok. Long beach front good for walking, jogging, sunbathing, shopping, restaurants, etc. Tourists don't swim there though, they use the pools in their hotels or go to Jomtien Beach.

Hotels with air and private toilet (during high season) can be found starting around 500 baht. Hotel near Pattaya 2nd Road will make it easy to get around. Local baht bus transportation is only 10 baht for the set routes.

A hotel in Pattaya City will have you closer to entertainment, restaurants, travel agencies for tours, etc. A hotel in Jomtien will be a little more remote and your transportation may cost a little more to get around. Keep in mind this is high season!

Good luck.

If you have been to Koh Samet (which I is my favourite place to go at weekend) I guess you have been to Pattaya/Gotlan already as they are more basic for tourist than Koh Samet. So that's the big places east of BKK. I guess, if you want closest to BKK, the next places to try are south west of Bangkok - Cha-am and Hua-Hin; although they are not that close to Bangkok (about 2 and half - 3 hours in car). Cha-am is bit like feeling of Pattaya but not so much non-Thai tourist. Hua-Hin is more hi so as The King lives there. Beautiful beach in Hua-Hin in south part near Wat Khoa Takiep.

Chiang Mai is excellent for some thing but not for beach. I think you ask about beach.

Hua Hin http://www.discovery-thailand.com/Hua%20Hin%20hotels.html is a good idea if you want a quiet gataway. Dusit Resort was great, my room was 1st floor, and I could access to swimming pool from our room very easily. staff were all very friendly and attentive. What I love most was their beautiful and clean swimming pool.

Night market is also interesting, there are some fake brand clothes & bags (just look as real), lots of food like pad thai, thai sweet, grilled corn and fresh fruits.

Hua Hin would be the ideal spot for you.

Three hours by road, great beaches, 2 to 5 star accommodation, plenty of good nightlife, big night market, great food, especially seafood, not so crowded, and friendly atmosphere.

Well worth a visit.

Have a good trip.

Hua Hin is nice and quiet and from the Southern Bus Station, about a 200 baht ride, taking about 3 hours. Guesthouses for about 800 baht and a nice beach.

There are just two beach areas close to BKK - either Pattaya to the east, or the Cha-Am/Hua Hin area to the west. Both are quite touristic already, so they will be different to those islands, which are much more quiet.

Phuket is good, you can fly there with one2 go or you can catch an overnight bus.

I can ask a holiday guide to find you a good price hotel.

Chaing Mai my father in law lives there and has been out there three years great place.
